The United Sacred Harp Convention LP – 11 euros
Sacred harp refers to a type of acapella note-reading more than a musical vibe, so some congregations are slow swayers, while the ones recorded here are more like a white people's version of a wigwam chant. Chunks of the congregation are broken up to sing different parts, & everyone tunes to a leader. Harmony is roughshod, often using lines that make sense to sing by themselves instead of ones that blend perfectly with the lines around them. Recorded by Alan Lomax & Shirley Collins at the Corinth Baptist church in rural Alabama. Tracklisting: The Last Words of Copernicus, The Bower of Prayer, Newburgh, Minister's Farewell, Logan, Sabbath Morning, New Topia, Present Joys, Greenwich, Arbacoochie, Invitation, Huntington, Morning Prayer, Mount Zion, New Jerusalem, The Parting Hand, Hallelujah/New Britain.

Assiyo Bellama LP – 12 euros
A selection from Ethiopiques vols 24 & 25. Slithering organ & sax orchestras that seem to have no end of drowsy minor-key soul breaks to lay on your ears. Mostly taken from the gorgeous catalog of Amha Records. Lots of lesser known artists (like Seyfou Yohannes, who sang on just 6 singles before dying at age 26), but Mulatu Astatqe makes an appearance as well. Tracklisting: Mulatu Astatque-Assiyo Bellema, Abbebe Tessemma-Ashasha Beyew, Getachew Kassa & Soul Ekos Band-Bey Lesenabetesh, Seyfou Yohannes-Yekermo Sew, Abbebe Tessemma-Gebre Guratch Gute, Samuel Belay-Lebene Sheweshew, Seyfou Yohannes-Metche Dershe, Ayalew Mesfin-Lene Amtchi Bitcha Nes, Damtew Ayele-Wefe Yelala, Tamrat Molla & Venus Band-Ber Anbar Seberelewo.

Orchestre Regional de Mauritanie LP – 12 euros
Nouakchott is one of the strangest places on earth. A sleepy fishing village chosen to be the capital of Mauritania upon it's independence from France in 1960, it was programmatically built over & has seen it's population suddenly double or triple more than once. A lot of people live in tents, water is scarce, and one of the local political tangles is the continued existence of slavery. The desert blows in & slowly buries buildings, pushing the city ever closer to the coast. And most of the musicians play parties & weddings instead of recording. During the country's early years, the president sent musicians to Conkary for music lessons in hopes of starting a national band to make specifically Mauritanian music. The band that resulted was led by singer Hadrami Ould Meidah. Slow, spacious & melancholy afrofunk with flute & electric wah-wah. Tracklisting: Senam-Mosso, Oumletna, Kamlat, La Femma Mauritanienne, Mauritanie Mon Pays Que J'Aime, Douga Sosso, Chabab El Bilad.

V/A-A Short Life Of Trouble LP – 11 euros
Adding electricity to the recording process round about 1925 allowed softer instruments that people had in their houses, like dulcimers, little guitars, or autoharps, to be picked up clearly. Ralph Peer, who worked for Columbia, Okeh & Victor, & was present at 4 or 5 of the most seminal recording sessions of the 1920s, was also the first guy to travel around with recording equipment from city to city. He asked around for where to find people who played at home, & at the behest of Ernest Stoneman, went through the appalachian mountains, inviting folks he liked. He set up his gear in Bristol, Tennessee in 1927. Both the Carter Family & Jimmie Rodgers were among his guests, and it kicked off the entire industry of country music on 78. Tennessee fiddlers, Kentucky banjo clawmen, delta blues singers, Carolina slide players, & other men & women of constant sorrow. Tracklisting: Arthur Smith Trio-Adieu False Heart, BF Shelton-Pretty Polly, Carter Family-Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone, Mississippi John Hurt-Louise Collins, Emry Arthur-Reuben oh Reuben, Jimmie Tarlton-Lowe Bonnie, Shortbuckle Roark & Family-I Truly Understand That You Love Another Man, Clarence Ashley-Dark Holler Blues, Emry Arthur-Man of Constant Sorrow, Cackle Sisters-Why I'm Grieving, Buell Kazee-A Short Life of Trouble, Moses Mason-Molly Man, Bascom Lamar Lunsford-Lulu Wall.

L'Orchestra National A de la République du Mali LP – 10 euros
Modibo Keita was Mali's first President, ruling the nation from 1960 to 1968. Inspired by Guinea's Sékou Touré, his government enacted a radical cultural policy which saw the formation of regional and national orchestras. L'Orchestre National "A" de la République du Mali were the first of these bands, and were formed the day after Mali's independence. In accordance with the cultural policies of the new government, the orchestra consisted of "musicians sworn to serve their country by contributing with all their genius to the protection and revalorization of Malian musical art". The orchestra contained some of the best musicians in the land, though not all could fit into one band, hence the existence in later years of the National "B" and "C" orchestras. The National "A" orchestra was led by Keletigui Diabaté, a multi-instrumentalist who played lead guitar in the group. The connection between Guinean and Malian cultural policy is enshrined in the group, for Keletigui was a former member of Guinea's Orchestré de la Garde Républicaine (Première Formation). The National "A' Orchestra's only LP (pictured above) was released in circa 1970 on the Bärenreiter-Musicaphon label. It contains two songs from the epic narrative tradition of the griots, "Taara" and "Duga", the latter on par with the best performances recorded in Mali. The exceptional number on the LP, however, is "Janfa", a song concerning a lover's betrayal (also performed by the Tjiwarra Band, among others). It's a superb number with a mesmerizing guitar solo by Keletigui Diabaté, and it was surely an inspiration for many of the nation's musicians. It's criminal that this LP, along with the other Bärenreiter's, has never been re-released.
